BAM advances hospital construction through expanded use of Autodesk digital tools
BAM UK and Ireland is progressing construction of the National Children’s Hospital in Dublin with Autodesk Construction Cloud at the centre of its workflow, marking one of the most extensive uses of BIM-driven coordination on a major healthcare project in the country.
Ireland’s National Children’s Hospital is a large multi-phase development, bringing three hospitals into a single campus and introducing a significant volume of rooms, facilities and clinical infrastructure.
BAM has worked with Autodesk since winning the build-only contract in 2016, adopting successive generations of BIM platforms to manage the project’s scale and technical requirements.
The contractor uses Autodesk Construction Cloud as the common data environment, supporting information exchange for more than 100 subcontractors across five main build zones.
The role of ACC deepened as the project expanded, allowing the company to move from earlier BIM360 platforms into a unified workflow with improved connectivity and task management.
The team has also embedded asset tagging across the campus, with QR-coded rooms and equipment feeding into ACC for structured handover documentation.
According to Arran Timms of the National Paediatric Hospital Development Board, “the assets module is the backbone of everything.” The system enables rapid issue reporting and real-time room checks, which BAM’s MEP manager Sinead Rogan described as “instant information at your fingertips – which is a game changer.”
To protect sensitive sections completed ahead of full handover, BAM deployed Autodesk Tandem, piloting digital twin monitoring for temperature, humidity, leaks and access in IT-critical spaces.
Sensor data, heatmaps and thresholds allow the contractor to track conditions remotely and maintain completed rooms while adjacent works continue. The setup also supports the upcoming operational transition, with asset-linked information accessible in a 3D model environment.
