A European consortium led by CIRCE has launched BIOS MATER, a Horizon Europe initiative designed to reshape the construction sector through sustainable, bio-based materials. Co-funded by the Circular Bio-Based Europe Joint Undertaking and the European Union, the project applies circular economy principles and Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design solutions to reduce environmental impact across the building lifecycle.

The 22-partner consortium spans 10 countries, including AIMPLAS, which brings polymer innovation expertise to develop low-impact, energy-efficient construction solutions. BIOS MATER will deliver four key products: sandwich panels for flooring and interiors, bio-based thermoplastic wall panels and tiles, fiber-reinforced bio-resin exterior cladding, and biodegradable plantable interior tiles. These will be tested under real-world conditions at a dedicated demonstration park, showcasing performance, durability, and scalability.

The project addresses a critical challenge: the construction sector is responsible for approximately 37% of global CO₂ emissions. By creating high-performance alternatives from renewable resources, BIOS MATER aims to maintain or exceed existing standards for durability and safety while embedding circular economy strategies to minimise waste. Digital transparency and active stakeholder engagement will support adoption and market integration.

Carlos Pérez, Project Coordinator at CIRCE, highlights the project’s potential to combine sustainability and practical market solutions, enabling Europe’s built environment to embrace bio-based, low-carbon practices. BIOS MATER aligns closely with the European Green Deal, the EU Circular Economy Action Plan, and broader climate neutrality objectives, representing a significant step toward a sustainable, innovation-driven construction future.
