Gas Networks Ireland to connect €50m Kildare biomethane plant to national network
Gas Networks Ireland has signed an agreement with Evergreen Agricultural Enterprises to link its €50 million biomethane plant in Monasterevin, County Kildare, to the national gas network — marking a key step in scaling up Ireland’s renewable gas capacity.
The anaerobic digestion facility will process 100,000 tonnes of distilling by-products annually, generating up to 100 GWh of renewable biomethane — enough to heat more than 8,000 homes while cutting carbon emissions by 18,500 tonnes a year. The plant supports the National Biomethane Strategy, which aims to deliver 5.7 TWh of homegrown biomethane by 2030.
Beyond clean energy production, the facility will operate an on-site greenhouse powered by recovered heat and liquid biofertiliser, growing vegetables for local donation — a practical demonstration of the circular economy.
Gas Networks Ireland’s Head of Business Development, Karen Doyle, said biomethane is a “proven, scalable solution” to decarbonising energy-intensive sectors. She noted that projects like Monasterevin not only reduce emissions but also enhance Ireland’s energy security by lowering reliance on imported fuels.
Evergreen Director Patrick Meade emphasised the project’s focus on sustainable resource use, innovation, and community benefit, with up to 75 direct and indirect jobs expected during construction and operation.
As Ireland accelerates its renewable gas rollout, Monasterevin stands out as a model for integrating waste management, energy production, and local development.
