Industry NewsPerpetua Resources advances Stibnite Gold Project construction after US court clears path
US-listed mining company Perpetua Resources Corp. has commenced a new phase of construction at its Stibnite Gold Project in central Idaho, following a 29 May ruling by the United States District Court of Idaho that denied a motion for a preliminary injunction sought by project opponents. As reported by PR Newswire, the decision allows critical-path construction activities for the 2026 field season to proceed on schedule, with gold and antimony production targeted for 2029.
Construction commenced on 30 May with initial works on the Burntlog Route, a key access road identified by the US Forest Service as the preferred route to the project site. The route was selected after a determination that it provides safer travel, limits proximity to sensitive waterways, and reduces impacts on the environment and local residents.
Works on the Burntlog Route are proceeding in parallel with construction of on-site worker housing facilities, selected powerline upgrades, and approved exploration and geotechnical drilling. These activities build upon early works construction that Perpetua began in October 2025.
In preparation for the summer construction season, Perpetua has engaged local contractors and service providers across Idaho, with contracts representing approximately $45 million (€41.5 million) in direct work expected for businesses and communities in the state.
Jon Cherry, president and CEO of Perpetua Resources, said: "This construction season is narrow and important to advance major infrastructure for the on-time delivery of antimony to support demand from the U.S. military. We also are pleased to continue with important environmental restoration and our commitment to economic development in Idaho."
The Stibnite Gold Project is designed to redevelop and rehabilitate the abandoned Stibnite mining district, which was largely mined for antimony and tungsten during World War II and the Korean War. The approved project includes environmental restoration measures intended to improve water quality, remove legacy mine waste, reconnect fish habitat, and restore streams and wetlands within the project area.
The US Department of War has identified the Stibnite Gold Project as the only US mine capable of producing antimony volumes sufficient to meet defence demand by 2029. The project holds the only identified domestic reserve of antimony in the United States, a critical mineral essential to defence, energy and manufacturing sectors.
