New York City-based contractor Turner Construction has been appointed by American Express to lead base building construction at 2 World Trade Center, marking advancement of the final commercial tower in the Lower Manhattan complex with construction activity scheduled to commence this spring and project completion targeted for 2031.

Construction Dive reported that the project will span nearly 2 million square feet across 55 floors, incorporating more than an acre of outdoor space with terraces and gardens alongside views of the Manhattan skyline. American Express selected New York City-based Silverstein Properties as developer and London-based Foster + Partners as design architect, with officials not disclosing total project cost.

Kevin O'Toole, chairman of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, said moving forward with the final commercial office building at the World Trade Center marks an important milestone for the campus and region. He noted that 2 World Trade Center strengthens one of the country's most significant centres of commerce and transportation, reflecting sustained focus required to advance projects of this scale.

The building will be developed on land owned by the Port Authority under a long-term ground lease. Once complete, the project will generate approximately $5.9bn (€5.5bn) to New York City's economy and about $6.3bn (€5.8bn) to the state of New York economy overall, according to a press release from the office of Governor Kathy Hochul.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the project represents thousands of union jobs sustaining families and strengthening communities. He emphasised that when investing in New York, investment must flow to working people including carpenters, electricians and labourers who build the city.
